Medicare Advantage (Part C)

Medicare Advantage, or Part C, is the private-plan route: insurers approved by Medicare take over your coverage, must match everything Parts A and B provide, and usually stack drug coverage and extra benefits on top.

The extras often come at no added premium, since Medicare pays the insurer directly to manage your care. Below: who qualifies, when to enroll, what's covered, and what it costs.

What Medicare Advantage covers

By law an Advantage plan covers everything Original Medicare covers. Most go further:

  • Hospital stays (inpatient care)
  • Doctor visits and outpatient care
  • Emergency services and mental health care
  • Home health services (non-hospice)
  • Prescription drugs (in most plans)
  • Dental, vision and hearing benefits
  • Fitness memberships (SilverSneakers)
  • Worldwide emergency travel coverage
  • Over-the-counter product allowances

Extras differ plan to plan; the Summary of Benefits is where the truth lives.

How much Medicare Advantage costs

What you actually spend depends on the plan you pick and the county you live in. The moving parts:

  • $0 premium plans: common in most areas, though your Part B premium never goes away.
  • Deductibles: some plans skip them entirely; others split medical and drug deductibles.
  • Copays and coinsurance: small fixed charges or percentages each time you use care.
  • Out-of-pocket maximum: a yearly ceiling on your spending, something Original Medicare never offers.
  • Income effect: IRMAA surcharges on Parts B and D still apply at higher incomes.

Final thoughts

Advantage plans trade network flexibility for bundled convenience and a spending cap. Whether that trade favors you depends on your doctors, your medications, and your county's plan lineup. A Legacy Life Group agent can run that comparison with you in one sitting.
