The programs nobody advertises
Medicare Savings Programs, run through your state, can pay your Part B premium and sometimes your deductibles and coinsurance. Extra Help, a federal program, cuts Part D drug costs to a few dollars per prescription. Medicaid can wrap around Medicare entirely for those with the lowest incomes. And many Advantage plans offer special coordination for people who hold both.
None of these arrive automatically. Every one requires an application, which is exactly why so much help goes unclaimed.
Who qualifies
Thresholds move every year and differ by state, but the pattern holds: if your income is modest and your savings are limited, apply. The qualification lines sit higher than most people assume, and assets like your home and car usually do not count.
The worst outcome of applying is a no. The worst outcome of not applying is paying hundreds a month you never owed.
How to start
Extra Help runs through Social Security, online or by phone. Medicare Savings Programs run through your state Medicaid office. Or skip the maze: tell us your situation and we will point you at the exact programs worth your time, and help with the paperwork. That service is free.
